Saw Adventureland today. It’s from the director of Superbad, and like Superbad it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t very good, either. The characters are interesting but that’s about it. I guess it was supposed to be kind of a story about growing up, learning to trust yourself and not believing everything someone says, but whatev, Kristen Stewart is in it. Also, Bill Hader.

Surprisingly, this movie isn’t bad. I might even have to say it was pretty good. (The fourth paragraph of this entry is when spoilers start, if there is a such thing for a movie like this.)
It’s a simple romantic comedy, and sure, the acting talents of Paris Hilton were just as you’d expect, but she isn’t even the main character. The lead guy, who reminded me a lot of the guy who played Napoleon Dynamite, was in most of the scenes as a guy who wanted to get with “the Hottie,” Paris Hilton, who was insanely loyal to her best friend, “the Nottie,” played by Christine Lakin (Al from Step-by-Step, remember her?!), and wouldn’t go on any dates unless her friend was, too.
So, the guy trying to find men to go on dates with the Nottie led to some awkwardly funny but admittedly predictable scenes.
However, as the movie goes on, you find our main guy and the Nottie have a lot in common. Sooner or later, the Nottie ends up getting a makeover and, long story short, the guy falls in love with her. (This might seem kind of “Shallow Hal” shallow, here, only falling in love with her after she looks good, but that’s not exactly what happened.)
The acting from everybody except Paris Hilton and the guy’s best friend was just good enough to get you by, and the writing during the last 2/3rds of the movie was actually decent. I actually smiled and said “Awww” at the end.
