Here are a few very expensive lessons I’ve learned about poker. As long as I take away a lesson from each hand I lose, I think it’s still a good investment:
(1) If you have a high-mediocre pocket pair like 10-10, J-J, or Q-Q, someone will always have K-K or A-A on your ass. If they don’t, they have something like 7-7 and will flop a 7.
(2) When you have pocket Aces, don’t get excited. You’re going to lose. I’ve come to fear A-A, because, even though it’s the absolute best hand before any cards come down, as soon as the cards come down, it’s just as vulnerable as anything else. Therefore, I do not get the “best hand” hype. I’ve lost more with AA than I have won. I had AA yesterday, and the flop was 9-7-2, all different suits. I figured the liklihood of someone calling my initial pre-flop bet of 800 holding 9-7 or 7-2 was slim, so I went all in with AA, high pocket pair. Someone flipped over 7-7 and I lost.
